Routing a work area

The workflow of a work area is intended to associate the revision of documents within the work area with an engineering process. It also controls and tracks the steps of the process over time. Routing a work area executes a workflow transition that changes the work area’s current workflow state to one of the next possible states.

Before you begin

It is important to understand the effect that executing a work area workflow transition will have on the documents it contains. After a transition is executed, it may be difficult to reverse those effects. If you are unsure about these effects, consult a system administrator.

All documents in a work area must be in the Released state in order to route the work area.

To route a work area:

  1. Open the work area that you want to route.
  2. Click the button at the right end of the context bar that is named for the current work area status. Select an available transition from the menu that appears.

Or

  1. Open the work area that you want to route.
  2. Right-click the root of the work area and select an available transition from the menu that appears.

Depending on the configuration of the work area template from which the work area was created, executing a work area transition may automatically perform additional actions:
